Puerto Morelos Hosts 21st Open Water Marathon With 960 Swimmers

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The 21st Open Water Marathon “Ruta del Arrecife” kicked off in Puerto Morelos with 960 swimmers, solidifying the town’s status as a key sports destination in the Mexican Caribbean.

Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu led the official opening ceremony, emphasizing the importance of hosting high-level competitions in the municipality.

The event draws athletes from various categories and states across Mexico, competing in a privileged natural setting surrounded by the reef system that distinguishes this tourist destination.

The marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2026 National Open Water Championships and the Open Water Swimming Qualifier Aruba 2026, projecting Puerto Morelos onto the international sports stage.

Coordination with the Port Authority and fishing cooperatives ensured optimal safety conditions for participants while reinforcing environmental protection measures in the reef area.

Municipal officials noted that such events strengthen the tourism offering and promote economic diversification. The influx of athletes, coaches, and family members generates revenue for local hotels, restaurants, and services.
