Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — In an unprecedented move for animal protection during emergencies, Puerto Morelos has inaugurated a mixed shelter for dogs and cats in the event of a hurricane, backed by the state administration led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz emphasized that this facility is part of a statewide initiative to safeguard both residents and their companion animals during extreme weather events.

A State-Backed Initiative for Animal Safety

The newly established shelter is located at the "Ramón Bravo Prieto" Telesecundaria on Caoba Street between 52nd and 56th in the municipal seat. The project was made possible through collaboration with the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas of Quintana Roo (Ibanqroo) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

"This is an initiative by the governor to protect both people and their pets, offering them a safe space during emergencies caused by severe weather," Mayor Tziu Muñoz stated.

Fully Equipped Shelter Ready for Operation

The shelter has been outfitted with essential supplies, including:

  • 10 foldable wire cages
  • First aid kits
  • Cat litter
  • Food for dogs and cats
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Bowls and leashes

Trained Personnel and Upcoming Regulations

In addition to the equipment, staff from the Animal Welfare Department and the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination have received training in pet first aid as part of a comprehensive hurricane response strategy.

Dafne García Peña, Director of Animal Welfare for the municipality, confirmed that operational guidelines for these shelters will soon be published in the State Official Gazette, standardizing their use across Quintana Roo.

Quintana Roo Leads in Pet Emergency Preparedness

With this development, Quintana Roo becomes the first state in Mexico to establish temporary shelters for dogs and cats during natural disasters. Over the past year, initial shelters have been set up, and with this latest addition, all 11 municipalities in the state will now have designated pet refuge spaces.
