Illegal jungle clearing halted near Cobá by environmental agency

Environmental authorities inspecting illegal jungle clearing near Cobá archaeological site

Cobá, Quintana Roo – An illegal clearing of between two and three hectares of jungle was detected approximately five kilometers from the Cobá roundabout, along the highway toward Nuevo Xcan, according to a report by activist Elías Sieberborn.

According to the complaint, the damage extends along approximately 700 meters, where machinery opened a continuous strip of vegetation without any public information about permits, environmental impact statements, or land use plans.

Following the citizen intervention, PROFEPA agents went to the site and placed closure seals, temporarily suspending the activities. So far, it is unknown who is responsible for the clearing or what the purpose of the land would be.

Sieberborn warned that community vigilance must be maintained to prevent the works from resuming and to demand transparency about the procedure, especially given the increase in illegal trails and openings recently detected in the area. This phenomenon has intensified in municipalities like Tulum, allegedly with the purpose of fragmenting and selling land.

The activist called on environmental and municipal authorities to inform about the legal status of the property and to reinforce supervision to prevent new clearings in this jungle corridor, an area that has been heavily impacted by the Maya Train construction works.
