Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed she will hold a brief meeting with her counterparts Donald Trump and Mark Carney during her trip to Washington for the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw.
Sheinbaum shared details about her travel plans, stating she will depart on Thursday afternoon for Washington, where she will stay at a hotel. Following the FIFA event at the Kennedy Center, she will hold a meeting with Mexicans before returning on Saturday for a celebration in the Zócalo.
“We are not going this afternoon or evening to Washington; we will use a plane from the Secretariat of National Defense due to travel times. (…) We will attend the event at the Kennedy Center in the morning, and everything indicates we will have a small meeting with President Trump and another with Prime Minister Carney,” she commented about her trip.
Trade Issues to Dominate Sheinbaum-Trump Meeting
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the main topic to discuss with her counterpart Donald Trump is trade, following the American leader’s statements about ending the free trade agreement when it is actually under review.
She affirmed they are trying to make progress regarding recent tariffs imposed on imports of automobiles, steel, and aluminum. She insisted that the three countries depend mutually on trade, expressing confidence that the treaty review will go well.
“We have the pending issue of trade (…) he also says sometimes, which is why we shouldn’t take everything literally, because he said ‘ends the treaty,’ but in reality the treaty doesn’t end, there’s a review, but it’s not true that it ends, though in his vision he presents it this way, but he also suggests there could be another treaty. Mexico has some of the best trade agreements (…), but we want to advance on the issue of automobiles, steel, and aluminum because we have already completed the review of 54 tariff barriers that were imposed,” she commented.
