Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A police raid at a commercial plaza has forced the complete closure of two major roads in Playa del Carmen since early Wednesday morning, causing significant traffic disruptions throughout the city.
The operation is being conducted by the State Prosecutor’s Office with support from the Mexican Navy, which has cordoned off the area while investigators work inside a building housing a laundromat and other businesses.
The raid is taking place in front of the Xcacel subdivision in a commercial complex that also includes a fruit stand and convenience stores. State and federal police units remain stationed around the perimeter to prevent vehicle access while the investigation continues.
The road closures began in the early morning hours, creating complications for drivers heading to work and other destinations throughout the city. Many had to modify their usual routes, with alternative options including CTM Avenue, the federal highway, and internal streets in Villas del Sol.
Regular commuters passing through the area initially expressed confusion about the heavy police presence and roadblocks, fearing a violent incident had occurred. Authorities later confirmed it was a standard investigative operation conducted according to legal procedures.
Officials have not yet released official information about the reason for the raid or whether any arrests have been made. Pedestrian access has been permitted for residents and workers in the area, while vehicle traffic remains restricted.
Authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution and use alternate routes, as they have not specified how long the roads will remain closed. More information about the operation’s results is expected to be released in the coming hours.
