Playa del Carmen has embarked on a rigorous urban renewal campaign aimed at improving the city's image and restoring its charm. The initiative was kick-started with a city-wide clean-up and beautification project, under the supervision of Solidaridad Mayor, Estefanía Mercado.

The renewal efforts began on 11 Sur Avenue, between 85th and 95th streets. Five teams from the municipal Public Services Secretary were deployed to carry out tasks such as tree and grass pruning, pothole patching, painting curbs and sidewalks, improving public lighting, and cleaning absorption wells. Specialized equipment including cranes, cleaning machines, jet patchers, and drills were utilized for these tasks.

Mercado, who personally oversaw the work, said, “We started with the cleaning of road dividers and have so far managed to clean around 4 million square meters of our public spaces. This is how we are creating a cleaner, more orderly, and dignified municipality.”

The initiative is part of a larger strategy to improve all neighborhoods in Playa del Carmen. Over 3,264 street lights have already been serviced, primarily in the Colosio, Villas del Sol, and Ejido neighborhoods. In these areas, at least 11 kilometers of wiring had to be replaced to restore lighting services and improve street safety.

The city has also addressed the majority of the 3,500 potholes detected across the city, enhancing road safety and traffic flow. Eladio Poot, Deputy Director of Urban Maintenance and Hygiene, said a preventive operation has been launched to clean absorption wells in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

In addition to this, the painting of road dividers and sidewalks will continue to clearly delineate parking zones. "We are marking permitted and restricted parking areas with white and yellow paint to organize traffic and prevent accidents," Poot added.

Through these efforts, the municipal government aims to reclaim public spaces and transform the urban image of Playa del Carmen, creating a safer, more functional, and visually appealing environment.
