Playa del Carmen — The regulation of vacation rentals in the municipality will begin to be applied gradually during the first months of the year, after this scheme was formally established in the law, reported Darwin Covarrubias, Secretary of Civil Protection.
According to the official, municipal authorities are already working in coordination with the Revenue and Treasury departments to implement strategies that will organize this sector, which has grown rapidly in recent years.
In a first stage, he explained, priority will be given to the voluntary regularization of property owners dedicated to vacation rentals, before initiating stricter verification processes. The intention is for citizens to come forward, comply with regulations, and avoid penalties.
“The regulation is already in the law and we are prepared to begin. There will be a period for owners to get up to date voluntarily,” he stated.
Civil Protection will focus its initial reviews on aspects related to risk prevention, especially in the correct installation and validity of gas tanks, as well as the general safety conditions of the properties.
The objective, Covarrubias emphasized, is to reduce risks for both guests and neighbors, without affecting tourism activity.
Although no official figure was given for the number of properties that will be reviewed, the secretary confirmed that the vacation rental registry has already been identified by the Revenue department, which will allow for an orderly progression in the process.
Authorities anticipate that in the coming days the first notices and formal invitations will be issued to owners to begin their regularization.
