Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities suspended a taxi driver from service and revoked his license after a viral video showed him threatening a tourist couple with death and driving recklessly during a dispute over an excessive fare.
The Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) announced the immediate suspension following the video’s spread on social media. The incident occurred during the busy Easter holiday season when the driver attempted to charge double the established rate for a short trip, citing a lack of change and supposed terminal fees.
When the passengers refused to pay the inflated price, the driver began speeding inside the vehicle, hurling insults and making serious threats. The institute stated the suspension aligns with its zero-tolerance policy toward any conduct that jeopardizes passenger safety, integrity, or rights.
Imoveqroo urged affected individuals and the public to file formal complaints with legal authorities to strengthen the case and ensure strict penalties under Quintana Roo’s regulations. The action aims to send a clear message about maintaining quality and respect in transportation services, especially in high-traffic tourist destinations like the Riviera Maya.
