Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities in Playa del Carmen announced a 23% reduction in alcohol-related traffic accidents over the past year, attributing the decline to strengthened traffic safety measures and consistent enforcement of sobriety checkpoints.
According to data from the Public Security Department, led by Carlos Alberto Montesinos García, 48 traffic incidents linked to alcohol consumption were recorded between August 2025 and January 2026. This represents a decrease compared to the same period the previous year, reflecting the impact of preventive measures implemented across the municipality.
These efforts are part of the “Muévete Seguro” (Move Safely) strategy, which maintains regular sobriety checkpoint operations coordinated by the Traffic and Roadway Directorate under Aureny Sugeydi Martín Manzanilla. The program aims to identify drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and prevent accidents.
During scheduled operations on Fridays and Saturdays, authorities conducted random inspections of 80 to 100 vehicles per day last weekend, resulting in 160 to 200 preventive checks.
Twelve drivers—six women and six men—tested positive for alcohol during these operations. Their vehicles were seized and removed from circulation in accordance with traffic regulations to prevent risks to pedestrians, families, and other motorists.
The municipal department noted that these operations are supervised by the Internal Affairs Directorate to ensure procedures follow legal standards, maintain transparency, and respect citizens’ rights.
