CHETUMAL, MX. – After reiterating that she will maintain her political presence in Chetumal, Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio acknowledged the need for the state capital to truly achieve the economic diversification promised for many years, as well as greater connectivity to improve tourist influx.
Following meetings held with social and political groups since last year, she said it is important to continue listening, in her capacity as a Chetumal native, to voices proposing projects to determine the path forward.
She noted that a large part of her team in the city council is from Chetumal, from families that bet on the project, and that is why that closeness will be maintained. The Playa del Carmen mayor recalled that for at least 20 years, Chetumal residents have heard about the need for economic diversification, so she considered it is time to materialize those promises and for the state capital to become a provider.
“There is a lot of work to do and the governor is promoting foreign investment to put the spotlight on the south, which has much to offer,” she said.
Mercado Asencio said that greater connectivity is also lacking to expand expectations and analyze projects like the Zaragoza Canal. “I am sure that good news will come, because Chetumal has streets like no other municipality, as it was planned in a way that no other municipality has.”
She indicated that it must be taken into account that Chetumal receives visitors not only from Mexico but also from Belize, and that it can become a major development hub, although for that it is necessary to invest in greater connectivity. She added that the governor is making efforts at the federal level, although it is work that requires time. “But we will surely see results very soon.”
Meanwhile, she said she is working so that Playa del Carmen residents are happy with the municipal government. “There are many challenges, because the needs do not stop. We solve 100 and another 200 come out; that is why I am focused 110 percent and I am happy with the good comments.”
Finally, she thanked the governor’s support and reiterated that she will always be respectful and dedicated to the work in Playa del Carmen.
