Playa del Carmen Cleans Up Streets with Abandoned Vehicle Removal

Municipal workers removing abandoned vehicles in Playa del Carmen's Nicte Há neighborhood

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — With the removal of abandoned vehicles from streets in the Nicte Há neighborhood, previously notified according to current regulations, Municipal President Estefanía Mercado launched the “Operativo Imagen” program, a strategy of the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCM) aimed at strengthening urban order, road safety, and the recovery of public space.

“In Playa del Carmen we are recovering order. With ‘Operativo Imagen’ we are removing from the streets abandoned vehicles that obstruct public roads and that, moreover, often become focal points of risk and criminal behavior. Security also begins with having orderly streets and making it clear that no one can appropriate public space,” stated the Mayor.

The program, under the responsibility of the SSCM’s Traffic Directorate, aims to improve the urban environment and strengthen the perception of security in the municipality’s neighborhoods.

In this first stage, the Nicte Há neighborhood was targeted, as it concentrated the highest number of citizen requests and reports related to abandoned vehicles in recent days.

During the launch of the operation, the Municipal President was accompanied by the head of the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat, Carlos Montesinos García, who reported that “Operativo Imagen” will gradually extend to all neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen, with the purpose of eradicating the improper use of public roads as permanent parking, as well as the illegal occupation of sidewalks and walkways by auto repair shops.

Secretary Montesinos García thanked citizen participation and emphasized the importance of reports, as they allow for more precise identification of areas with higher incidence of abandoned vehicles, thus optimizing removal actions and traffic management.

He highlighted that this information is key to focusing institutional efforts efficiently, contributing to improving mobility, security, and the quality of life of Playa del Carmen residents.

The removed units represented focal points of disorder and risk, affecting vehicular and pedestrian circulation, as well as the security of families living in the area.

Finally, the Traffic Director, Aureny Sugeydi Martín Manzanilla, who also accompanied Estefanía Mercado, indicated that with the implementation of “Operativo Imagen,” the municipal government reaffirms that in Playa del Carmen there is authority, regulations are respected, and firm action is taken to build a city with safer, more orderly, and dignified roads for all.
