Playa del Carmen Launches Cleanup Campaign to Combat Mosquito-Borne Diseases

A municipal cleanup campaign in Playa del Carmen's Ejido Sur neighborhood

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government has launched a cleanup campaign targeting items that collect water and breed mosquitoes, aiming to prevent outbreaks of dengue, zika, and chikungunya.

The Playa del Carmen City Council, through its Municipal Public Services Department, announced the campaign will take place in the Ejido Sur neighborhood on February 27 and 28 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What Is the Cleanup Campaign?

The campaign, known as descacharrización, focuses on removing discarded items like old tires, furniture, buckets, appliances, and other objects that can hold water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Officials say this preventive action helps reduce the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, particularly during the hot and rainy season.

How Residents Can Participate

Authorities are asking residents in the designated area to follow these steps:

  • Inspect their homes, yards, rooftops, and common areas for unused items that collect water.
  • Place these items on the sidewalk on the morning of the scheduled cleanup days.
  • Avoid blocking streets or sidewalks to prevent accidents and facilitate collection by municipal crews.

The municipal government is urging all Playa del Carmen residents to join this public health and urban cleanliness strategy, emphasizing that community participation is key to maintaining a healthier city.

For more details on future cleanup campaigns, residents can check the municipality’s official social media channels or website.
