Playa del Carmen to Host International Theater Festival With 10 Free Shows

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The city will become a hub for theater this month with the second International Theater Festival (FIC), featuring 10 free performances, two workshops, and an art exhibition from March 20-29.

Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, director general of the Institute of Culture and Arts, announced that all events are ready and will be free to the public, supported by municipal president Estefanía Mercado.

Festival Schedule

The festival opens on March 20 with the exhibition “Music and Theater for All” by Yucatecan musician Luis Rivero at the Art Gallery, featuring scores, photographs, and audio from his work with theater icons like Luis de Tavira and Raúl Zermeño, and Guillermina Bravo, founder of Mexico’s National Ballet.

Performances begin on March 21 with “Through the Peephole” by La Cumbancha (Mexico City-Playa del Carmen) outside the Teatro de la Ciudad, aimed at children aged 10 and up. That evening, “The Dwarf King” by Titiretadas from Yucatán will present a puppet show with live music at the Teatro de la Ciudad.

On March 22, Yucatecan company En Boca de Lobos will stage “The Ramayana (Passages from the Shadows)” at the Teatro de la Ciudad, suitable for audiences aged 10 and older.

Other highlights include:

  • “What Remains of Us” from Campeche on March 23 at the IMCAP Cultural Center Auditorium.
  • “Goddesses, Warriors, and Demons” featuring dances with masks from Japan and Indonesia on March 24 at the IMCAP Auditorium.
  • “Geni, the Last Temptation of the Gods” from Brazil and Mexico City on March 25 at the IMCAP Auditorium.
  • “Endless Silence” from Colombia on March 27 at the IMCAP Auditorium.
  • “Witches” by local collective Tepeyac-Xcaret on March 27 at the Teatro de la Ciudad.
  • “The Bard. A Journey to the Edge of Hope” directed by Carla Pedroza on March 28 at the Teatro de la Ciudad.

Workshops

Two limited-capacity workshops will be offered: “Music and Sound Design for the Stage” by Joaquín López Chaz from March 23-26 at the Bellavista neighborhood art school, and “Pop Op Scenographies for the Stage” by Ainé Martelli with assistant Citlalli Lobaco from March 26-29 at the same location.
