Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, December 21, 2025 — The government of Municipal President Estefanía Mercado commemorated National Maya Culture Day with a spiritually charged event at the Cultural Center.
Representing the general director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts of Playa del Carmen (IMCAP), Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar, the deputy director of Cultural Linkage and Development, Julio César Couoh, recalled that throughout 2025, several events and activities were scheduled to highlight the customs and traditions of this ancient people.
For her part, Karen Román Flores, representative of the Secretariat of the Interior, stated, “Supporting our indigenous peoples is on President Claudia Sheinbaum’s agenda, in promoting this type of activity for nationals and foreigners. We thank the Playa del Carmen Government, led by Estefanía Mercado, for promoting this dissemination. Long live Maya Culture and long live Mexico,” she celebrated.
Meanwhile, César Uuh Chi, director of Indigenous Affairs, belonging to the Secretariat of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, highlighted the importance of promoting our customs in today’s society. “Today we are closing the darkness and giving way to the light of hope,” he added.
The coordinator of Popular Cultures and Maya language teacher, Román Pat, presided over the ceremony by asking permission from the four cardinal points as tradition dictates, and highlighted the participation of the Maya Dancers of Mayapax.
The celebration was attended by students from the Maya language workshop taught at the Cultural Center, as well as Playa del Carmen residents and people from other countries.
