PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Quintana Roo — In an effort to strengthen the technical and operational preparedness of the region's emergency services, personnel from the Heroic Fire Department of Playa del Carmen conducted a training session for their counterparts in Puerto Morelos. This initiative is part of an inter-municipal collaboration designed to ensure more efficient and safer emergency response.

The specialized training involved practical exercises in a fire container, a facility that replicates real-life conditions of a structural fire. Participating firefighters were able to closely observe the behavior of flames and rehearse safety protocols designed to reduce risks during interventions. Additionally, exercises were carried out in a building, where techniques involving water jets were applied to cool surfaces, absorb heat, and extinguish fires more effectively.

The Secretary of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighting, Darwin Covarrubias, explained that this type of training not only strengthens the operational skills of the personnel but also fosters unity between municipalities.

“We are sharing the knowledge acquired through years of constant training. The intention is for our fire departments to support each other and remain prepared for any contingency that could risk the lives or property of citizens,” he stated.

In recent years, the Playa del Carmen firefighters have invested significant effort in their professional development through specialized courses in rescue, firefighting, and emergency management. This accumulated experience has allowed them to become a benchmark in the Northern Zone of Quintana Roo, to the extent of sharing their practices and knowledge with other jurisdictions.

Covarrubias emphasized that, beyond the technical aspects, the training promotes discipline, teamwork, and inter-institutional coordination—essential factors when responding to large-scale emergencies such as fires in hotels, businesses, residential buildings, or natural areas.

The partnership between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos responds to the need to develop joint strategies that optimize available resources and provide a more efficient service to the population. In a dynamic tourist corridor with a high density of visitors, the risks associated with fires, accidents, and environmental contingencies require fire departments capable of operating under standardized protocols.

According to the organizers, these training sessions will be held periodically to ensure personnel are updated on the most recent techniques and that a common front exists for facing emergencies.

“The knowledge transmitted in each practice means saving lives in the future. That is why these actions are so important and are part of our service vocation,” added Covarrubias.

The training in Puerto Morelos is part of a broader strategy to consolidate the professionalization of the region's emergency services, ensuring that citizens have access to prepared, coordinated, and capable teams ready to address any eventuality with efficacy and safety.
