Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The second edition of “Sounds of Hope,” a municipal arts initiative for children and seniors, concluded with a gala performance at the City Theater on Friday.

The event, organized by the Playa del Carmen Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts (IMCAP), featured singing, dance, and acting performances. It marked the end of a two-week program of workshops led by art education teachers including Christopher Simpson, Adrián Berazaín, and Almis Vera.

“Our municipal president Estefanía Mercado instructed us to create a space for children and seniors to come together through music, dance, and theater. For the second consecutive year, we have achieved that goal,” said IMCAP director general Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar.

The workshops were held at an art initiation school associated with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), with instruction in visual arts, music, theater, and dance.

Teacher Christopher Simpson thanked municipal president Estefanía Mercado, DIF Playa del Carmen honorary president Eduardo Asencio, and culture and sports commission chair Saúl Barbosa for supporting programs that strengthen the development of children and seniors.

During the gala, María Guadalupe, a member of the DIF Senior Citizens Club, said interacting with children “injects energy and provides valuable lessons.”

Illiana, from the Municipal Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center, shared her enthusiasm for the visual arts classes, while 10-year-old Jade expressed her enjoyment of painting, dance, and theater activities.

The closing event included a master class titled “The Body as a Channel,” taught by professor Edgar Zendejas.

Martínez Cuéllar also invited local families to attend performances by the National Ballet of Panama at the City Theater on April 15 and 16, with tickets available at tusboletos.mx.
