First Bishop of Cancún-Chetumal Diocese Dies at 78

Quintana Roo, Mexico — Pedro Pablo Elizondo, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal, died of a heart attack on Thursday morning, January 22, the Catholic Church in Quintana Roo reported.

The Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal announced the death through a message shared on social media, highlighting Elizondo’s dedication, closeness, and vocation of service. He was considered a key figure in consolidating the Catholic Church in both the northern and southern parts of the state.

During his episcopal ministry, he promoted pastoral work close to communities, strengthening religious and social life in a region of constant growth.

Following the news, various authorities and public figures expressed their condolences. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa deeply lamented the death of the bishop emeritus, emphasizing his pastoral trajectory, commitment to service, and contribution to the social and spiritual development of the state.

In her message, she acknowledged the mark Elizondo left among the faithful, priests, and communities he accompanied throughout his life.

The Church entrusted his soul to the Good Shepherd, whom he served with fidelity and love, while the Catholic community united in prayer for his eternal rest.

The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office expressed its heartfelt condolences for the death of Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, LC, First Bishop of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal.
