Government Expands Surveillance: Cancún’s 800+ New Cameras

In 2024, the government of Benito Juárez, Cancún, installed more than 800 security cameras across various districts through the Intelligence and Command Directorate. The continuation of this program into 2025 will depend on the administration's decision.

Zury Rodríguez Trinidad, the Director of Crime Prevention at the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of Benito Juárez, explained that the cameras were installed in residential and private properties. The placement of these cameras was based on a combination of crime statistics analysis and active participation from citizens.

Trinidad emphasized that the consent and involvement of residents are crucial for the success of this program. This is due to the placement of the cameras and the need for verification of geographical areas that the statistics suggest are high-risk or require additional surveillance.

"Operational deployment and proximity strategies, including the cameras, align with our analysis of crime statistics. We review these statistics daily, weekly, and monthly to understand the social behavior of Benito Juárez. However, without citizen cooperation, we wouldn't be able to install these devices," Trinidad stated.

The establishment of Neighborhood Committees and their Security Subcommittees has been instrumental in achieving these installations and fostering citizen cooperation. These committees continue to work on the strategies of the Secretariat for Citizen Security and Traffic.

In recent years, over 100 Security Committees have been established throughout the city. Work has already begun on reestablishing these committees in 2025, with five set up in areas such as Kusamil and other Superblocks in the city.

It's worth noting that Cancún municipality owns approximately 1,467 cameras, including those at 80 Smart Monitoring Points, neighborhood cameras, and others installed in various locations. Additionally, over 1,500 cameras have been integrated into the C5 security network by companies, hotels, unions, other entities, and the state government.
