Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo faces a key challenge for its water management: ensuring that water wells are in compliance. More than 6,600 expired concessions can benefit this year, thanks to administrative facilities that simplify the process. The correct registration of these rights strengthens the legal and responsible use of one of the most vital resources for the state.
The main use of these wells is agricultural, livestock, urban, and domestic, all essential for the economy and quality of life in the region. Most extractions come from underground aquifers, which represent the main source of supply in Quintana Roo due to subsoil conditions.
To facilitate regularization, a decree has been implemented that allows renewing expired concessions from October 2017 to April 2024. Only the expired title, official identification, and email need to be presented, making the process accessible for small and large users.
This mechanism seeks to strengthen control over water extraction, decrease irregular practices, and promote sustainable management. The National Water Law establishes the legal obligation to keep wells in compliance, thus protecting the human right to access water.
Legalization also helps the agricultural and livestock sector, which can transfer or sell land with correctly registered wells, ensuring continuity and security in their productive operations. Additionally, the process favors a more precise diagnosis of water use, improving state planning and management.
In a regional context where tourism, urban growth, and economic activities depend on water resources, regularization is key to avoiding future crises. The initiative promotes more coordinated and responsible water management, guaranteeing the sustainability of the resource in the long term.
With these measures, Quintana Roo advances toward more efficient water administration, in line with conservation and environmental protection priorities. The implementation of these programs reflects a commitment to the human right to water and the sustainable development of the region.
