Oaxacan Culture Comes to Playa del Carmen with Guelaguetza Riviera Maya Festival

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The cultural essence of Oaxaca arrives in the Mexican Caribbean this weekend with the Guelaguetza Riviera Maya 2026 festival, bringing traditional music, dance, cuisine, and crafts to the heart of this tourist destination.

The free festival takes place at Plaza Fundadores (Portal Maya) on March 7-8, offering over 12 hours of continuous programming each day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Inspired by one of Mexico’s most emblematic celebrations, the event aims to bring Oaxacan traditions to residents and visitors of the Riviera Maya.

Traditional Parade Kicks Off Celebration

The festival begins on March 6 at 6 p.m. with a traditional calenda parade through streets near Parque Fundadores. This colorful procession featuring dancers, musicians, and traditional characters announces the start of celebrations and invites public participation.

Two Days of Cultural Programming

The main festival on March 7-8 will feature musical performances, regional dances, and cultural displays on the main stage. Confirmed artists include Nylzher, Patricia Alcaráz, and Omar Osorio with his orchestra.

Additional cultural presentations include:

  • Traditional Oaxacan costume fashion show
  • Regional dance performances
  • Traditional folkloric spectacles

Oaxacan Food and Crafts Market

A gastronomic and artisan market will showcase Oaxaca’s most representative flavors and products, including:

  • Traditional dishes: tlayudas, tamales, garnachas, and mole
  • Traditional bakery items: pan de yema and pan capricho
  • Sweets and snacks: marquesote, chapulines, and artisanal chocolate
  • Typical drinks: artisanal mezcal and traditional ciruela curados

The market will also feature crafts made by Oaxacan producers, promoting the work of communities and artisans.

The festival seeks to strengthen cultural diversity and coexistence between communities, bringing together Oaxacan tradition and the multicultural atmosphere of the Riviera Maya in one space.
