Cancún’s Nichupté Bridge Opening Pushed to January

Construction of the Nichupté Bridge in Cancún connecting the Hotel Zone to downtown

Cancún. The Nichupté Vehicular Bridge, which will connect the Hotel Zone with the downtown area of the city, will likely be inaugurated in January, not in December as originally planned, stated Mara Lezama Espinosa, Governor of the State.

“What’s happening is that the final details are being fine-tuned. It’s an enormous project. I believe it will be inaugurated in January,” she declared tonight during an interview at the lighting of the Christmas Tree on the esplanade of the Cancún Municipal Palace.

In this regard, the governor called on the public not to believe “fake news” claiming there will be tolls to use the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge.

The governor emphasized that the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge will be completely free, as planned from the start of the project during the previous administration.

“Please, don’t be swayed by Artificial Intelligence, which invents things. It is free and will remain free,” she reiterated.

The governor also recalled that during the previous state government, there was an intention for this bridge to have tolls, but that intention was rejected by the current administration she leads.

“We did that in this government, we discussed it with the president at the time, Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador. There was a project in the previous state government administration where it was proposed to be a toll bridge. Of course we said no. When we presented it with the president, we always said it would be free, and so it will be, completely free,” she concluded.

According to official data, the project, with a total length of 11.2 kilometers, will feature three lanes—one in each direction and one reversible lane—a bike path, pedestrian walkways, emergency bays, and a modern lighting system. Its construction is being carried out by the company Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA).

The Nichupté Bridge project was announced in early 2022, when construction began as a priority project. Throughout 2024 and 2025, tentative dates for its inauguration have been announced, including one in December of this year.
