Cancún’s Electric Buses to Boost Mobility by 2025

Cancún, Mexico — The Quintana Roo Mobility Institute has announced that a new electric bus system, aimed at enhancing public transportation in Cancún, will begin operations at 4:30 AM as part of a broader mobility overhaul set for 2025. Technical testing for the initiative began in March of this year.

A More Efficient and Sustainable Model

The state agency detailed that the new public transportation units are designed to create a more efficient, orderly, and sustainable system. Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the institute, explained that the goal is to establish clear roles for each type of vehicle—buses, vans, motorcycle taxis, and minibuses—based on the specific needs of different roadways.

So far, evaluations have included 12-meter and 10.5-meter electric buses, as well as diesel-powered units with low-emission Euro 6 engines. The assessments focus on three key factors: vehicle autonomy and performance, appropriate dimensions for urban infrastructure, and necessary infrastructure conditions such as boarding and disembarking bays.

“We cannot have buses, vans, rapid transit, and motorcycle taxis all operating on the same avenue simultaneously. Depending on the area, we will determine which type of transportation is best suited for it,” Hernández Kotasek stated.

Extended Operating Hours and Improved Safety

Under the new system, public transport services will run continuously from 4:30 AM to 11:00 PM. The schedule is designed to align with the actual needs of the population, aiming not only to improve mobility but also to enhance passenger safety.

“We are building a mobility model that meets the standards of a growing city like Cancún—one that respects users, organizes transportation, and improves the quality of life for all citizens,” the official added.

The Importance of Public Transport Upgrades

Improving public transportation is critical for promoting sustainable mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and minimizing environmental impact. Key strategies include investing in modern infrastructure, such as electric rail systems, dedicated bus lanes (BRT), and integrated bike paths, to provide faster, safer, and more reliable service.

Increasing service frequency and punctuality will reduce wait times and improve user experience. Integrating different transport modes through unified fares or smart cards will facilitate transfers and encourage ridership. Digitalization—such as mobile apps for route planning, real-time schedules, and electronic payments—will further enhance accessibility and convenience.

Safety and cleanliness in stations and vehicles, supported by surveillance cameras and regular maintenance, are also priorities. Public consultations and surveys will help tailor services to actual demand. Finally, public awareness campaigns will highlight the benefits of public transport over private vehicles.
