A pickup truck damaged by a Molotov cocktail attack in Cozumel

Violent Early Morning Attack in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A direct attack with a device similar to a Molotov cocktail caused a pickup truck to catch fire in the Las Fincas neighborhood of Cozumel, an incident that also included a firearm threat against the vehicle’s owner.

The incident occurred early yesterday morning and was perpetrated by two individuals who fled on a motorcycle, reinforcing concerns about the recent series of assaults and car fires reported in different neighborhoods of the island.

According to the testimony of the victim—a fisherman—everything happened when he heard an explosion while inside his house.

Upon going outside, he saw his 2008 Ford Ranger pickup truck engulfed in flames and managed to observe two men on a black motorcycle moving away from the location.

He said he partially identified one of the aggressors and recounted that, when trying to approach, this individual pointed a firearm at him, causing him to stop while the perpetrators fled.

Neighbors who also heard the detonation reported the incident to the 911 emergency number. Meanwhile, the owner attempted to contain the flames with a fire extinguisher and noticed on the hood a plastic container that, according to his description, had the characteristics of a Molotov cocktail, which would confirm that the fire was intentional.

Fire Department personnel arrived to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other homes. The vehicle sustained significant damage to the front section.

After controlling the incident, Transit personnel moved the vehicle to the impound lot for corresponding investigations.

This case adds to other car fires reported in recent months in different parts of Cozumel, some of them investigated under the line of possible intentional aggressions or reprisals.

Residents of Las Fincas expressed concern about the growing recurrence of violent incidents in remote areas, where they claim surveillance is limited.

They said they feel fear due to the wave of violence that has been occurring in the municipality, emphasizing that they feel abandoned by authorities.

They indicated that these acts generate uncertainty among families, particularly during the early morning hours, when police response usually takes longer due to distance.

The victim requested that authorities advance in the investigations to identify those responsible, while neighbors asked for greater police presence and public lighting on the streets of the sector to reduce risks and prevent new attacks.

The State Attorney General’s Office is analyzing evidence recovered in the area, in a case that, due to its modus operandi and the firearm threat, could be classified as a direct attack.
