Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum cut short her working tour of Quintana Roo this weekend to travel to New York City for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
Sheinbaum arrived in Quintana Roo on Thursday evening, touring the coastal area of Tulum and the Jaguar Park, and holding a meeting with local hoteliers and service providers.
On Friday, she led a public conference at Military Air Base No. 20 near the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, where she announced that entry to Jaguar Park would be free for Mexicans and that archaeological zone fees would be significantly reduced. She also presented the Tulum Renace plan.
Later, at a mass event at the Poliforum in Playa del Carmen, she delivered 474 property titles to residents of the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood. In Puerto Morelos, she oversaw the operation of the oceanic sargassum vessel Natans, which collects seaweed at sea.
A scheduled press conference for Saturday morning in Playa del Carmen was canceled. She did hold a meeting in Puerto Morelos with the governors of the five states through which the Tren Maya passes, where she presented the first 12 locomotives for the cargo version of the train.
On Saturday afternoon, she led a housing handover ceremony under the Viviendas para el Bienestar program in Cancún’s Arcos Paraíso subdivision, alongside Governor Mara Lezama and Infonavit Director General Octavio Romero Oropeza. A Sunday press conference in Cancún was also canceled.
According to Mexican government sources, the cancellation of the final day’s agenda was because Sheinbaum accepted an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the World Cup final alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The three North American countries were co-hosts of the tournament.
Although a commercial flight Sheinbaum planned to take from Cancún International Airport on Saturday was suspended due to bad weather in New York, the president posted a video on social media confirming she would attend the match. She is expected to return to Mexico on Monday, July 20.
