Quintana Roo, Mexico — Wellness tourism is gaining significant ground in Mexico, generating an economic impact of $17.9 billion, with Quintana Roo’s destinations at the forefront due to their high concentration of hotels catering to this niche market. Tourists in this segment spend an average of $1,800 per visit, according to industry data.
A Growing Market with High Demand
Deloitte reports that wellness tourism accounts for 2.6% of Mexico’s overall tourism market, but the trend is on the rise. Resorts in Quintana Roo not only offer access to nature but also feature luxury spas, yoga retreats, meditation programs, and holistic therapies. Additionally, these properties promote outdoor activities, healthy cuisine, and beauty and body wellness treatments, positioning the Mexican Caribbean as a leader in this post-pandemic boom sector.
Rodrigo de la Peña Segura, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, emphasized that Quintana Roo’s destinations provide more than just sun and beach experiences. "We have an impressive infrastructure tailored to various market niches, including wellness," he said.
Bernardo Cuento Riestra, head of the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), noted that efforts are underway to reduce seasonal tourism fluctuations by promoting diverse markets. "Travelers seeking wellness see the Mexican Caribbean as a top choice," he stated.
Infrastructure Tailored for Wellness Travelers
The state’s hotel industry offers specialized products and services for wellness tourists, who seek experiences beyond relaxation. These visitors typically spend more and stay longer than the average tourist, with stays often exceeding three nights.
Statistics indicate that the Mexican Caribbean boasts a wide range of wellness-focused options, placing it among the top destinations in Latin America. These include therapeutic treatments, spiritual retreats, and immersive nature experiences.
The region’s ability to cater to this high-value segment underscores its competitive edge in the global wellness tourism market.
