The inaugural National Sustainable, Inclusive, and Fair Tourism Awards were recently held in the Mexican Caribbean. The awards ceremony, hosted at the City Theater of Playa del Carmen, celebrated the most innovative and inspiring initiatives in the tourism sector. The event recognized companies, governments, and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting sustainability, inclusion, and fairness within the Mexican tourism industry.
The awards ceremony was attended by key figures from the tourism industry, government officials, and representatives from various civil organizations. Together, they celebrated the winners across nine categories, each designed to honor excellence and leadership in the transformation of sustainable tourism in Mexico.
Among the winners, the BBVA National Sustainability Challenge was highlighted for rewarding initiatives such as the Bioenergy projects of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the Sargapanel of the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). These projects have made significant contributions to managing and utilizing sargasso, a type of seaweed, in the Mexican Caribbean.
The Association of Hotels of the Riviera Maya (AHRM) and The Seas We Love organized the event, with additional support from sponsors and collaborators who champion innovative projects in the tourism sector. The awards ceremony will continue to be an annual event in the Mexican tourism industry, encouraging the development of new initiatives that promote sustainability and inclusion across various Mexican destinations.
