Guadalajara, Jalisco — Mexico has deployed 2,000 additional troops to Jalisco following violent clashes that erupted after the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” The reinforcements arrived Monday as part of a coordinated security operation to restore order in the state.

Governor Pablo Lemus confirmed the military deployment, stating that the troops are already conducting patrols across various locations in Jalisco. The operation aims to prevent further criminal activity following Sunday’s violence, which occurred during a federal operation in Tapalpa, approximately 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara.

“We are gradually recovering normalcy,” Lemus said during a meeting with officials. He noted that all state security forces remain active, including police departments and civil protection teams working in the streets.

The governor reported that public transportation is slowly resuming service and municipal services have largely returned to normal across most municipalities. However, mass events remain canceled until further notice, and in-person classes have been temporarily suspended.

Lemus urged residents to act with caution and responsibility, emphasizing the need for unity between authorities and society. “This is a moment to maintain unity, working as a team so society sees our commitment to recovering peace and normalcy in Jalisco,” he stated.

Federal authorities confirmed that dozens of people died during Sunday’s clashes, including Mexican Army personnel and suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which Oseguera allegedly led. The violence highlights the security challenges facing the region following the cartel leader’s death.

Governor Lemus highlighted the coordination between federal, state, and municipal governments as crucial for ensuring citizen safety during this period of heightened security measures.
