Houston, Texas — Mexico’s national baseball team returns to the international stage with heightened expectations as the 2026 World Baseball Classic begins this week. Following a historic third-place finish in 2023 that captivated the nation, the squad now aims to confirm its status as a global power and at least match that podium position.
Managed by Benjamín Gil and featuring a roster blending Major League Baseball stars with Mexican League talent, Mexico enters the tournament as one of the teams to beat in an event that has captured worldwide attention from fans of the sport.
Group B Schedule in Houston
Mexico’s campaign starts at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, home of the Houston Astros, with a capacity exceeding 41,000 spectators. The team will play its Group B matches there from March 4 to 11.
Mexico shares Group B with established powers and emerging national teams, requiring full concentration from the first pitch. Analysts expect the team to advance to the quarterfinals by securing one of the group’s two qualifying spots.
While the tournament officially opens on Wednesday, March 4, with a game between Chinese Taipei and Australia at Tokyo Dome in Japan, Mexican fans must wait until Friday, March 6, to see their team take the field. Mexico debuts against Great Britain at noon, a match where the tricolor squad enters as the favorite.
Mexico faces Brazil on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. in a key game for securing qualification before the critical part of the schedule. The pivotal match comes on March 9 against the United States, a rivalry that has grown in intensity and quality in recent years and is expected to determine the group leader.
The team closes the group stage on March 11 against Italy, a historically competitive squad often built with minor league and MLB players, leaving no room for overconfidence.
A Balanced Roster
Mexico’s roster for this Classic reflects a balance between offensive power and a pitching staff with closing ability. Catcher Alejandro Kirk stands out not only for his handling of pitchers but also for his disciplined hitting, established as one of the most consistent catchers in the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays, with whom he reached the most recent World Series.
In the infield, the presence of Joey Meneses and Rowdy Téllez guarantees power at the corners, while the mobility of Luis Urías at shortstop and the versatility of young players like Jonathan Aranda and Nick Gonzales offer options for various game situations.
The outfield features one of the fans’ favorites in Randy Arozarena. The Seattle Mariners outfielder arrives as one of the absolute faces of this national team after solid performances in 2023 and leads a group of patrollers that includes the speed of Jarren Durán and the defensive solidity of Alek Thomas as standout performers in the field.
The pitching staff is perhaps the roster’s deepest area. With arms like Javier Assad and Taijuan Walker for starts and long relief, the team’s security rests on the arm of Andrés Muñoz. The native of Los Mochis and Seattle Mariners closer arrives as one of the most dominant relievers today, whose fastball velocity can silence any lineup.
Global Elite Competition
Mexico faces a tough challenge throughout the tournament. The United States boasts the historic power of Aaron Judge, captain of the New York Yankees, who seeks to add an international title to his individual trophy case, with the mission of returning the Stars and Stripes to the top glory, as happened in 2017.
In Group C, based at Tokyo Dome, Japan is led once again by Shohei Ohtani, the phenomenon who has redefined the capabilities of a professional player by dominating both pitching and hitting, though in this tournament he will be limited solely to batting duties at the request of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Japanese team shares the group with Australia, South Korea, the Czech Republic, and Chinese Taipei.
The Dominican Republic, placed in Group D alongside Venezuela (with Ronald Acuña Jr. and the brothers William and Willson Contreras as references), the Netherlands, Israel, and Nicaragua, arrives led by Juan Soto, whose ability to get on base and hit in key moments makes him the central axis of one of the most fearsome lineups, with the mission of winning its second Classic (they won in 2013). Their matches will be at LoanDepot Park in Miami, which will also host the direct elimination games.
Group A features a Puerto Rico squad arriving with some doubts due to the absence of certain players (Francisco Lindor will not play after failing to receive the necessary medical insurance to compete, so they will depend on Edwin Díaz and Nolan Arenado), with Cuba, Canada, Panama, and Colombia as their rivals. They will play at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital.
Elimination Phase
For Mexico, success in Houston is just the first step. The competition system indicates that the top two countries from each group advance to the direct elimination rounds in Miami, Florida. The quarterfinals will be played on March 13 and 14, followed by the semifinals on March 15 and 16. The tournament culminates on March 17, when the new champion will be crowned.
The challenge for the Mexican national team is consistency. Surpassing the third-place finish of 2023 requires not only talent but impeccable bullpen management and timely hitting against the best arms on the planet. Glory is in sight, and Mexican baseball has a great opportunity to crown itself.
