Cancun, Quintana Roo — A video by Mexican YouTuber J Daniel has reignited debate over taxi fares in Cancun, after he documented what he described as excessive charges by drivers at the Cancun International Airport and in the Hotel Zone.
During his visit, the content creator decided to test the claims circulating online about transportation costs. He requested quotes from several drivers at both locations.
In his experiment, the first taxi driver quoted 800 pesos ($44) for a ride from the airport to the Moon Palace hotel. A second driver asked for $68 (about 1,200 pesos), while a third quoted 1,980 pesos ($109) for the same route.
The wide disparity in fares caught the YouTuber’s attention, prompting him to compare prices for similar trips.
He repeated the exercise with drivers in the Hotel Zone. According to the video, a trip that would cost around 160 pesos via a ride-hailing app was quoted by some taxi drivers at over 600 pesos.
The video has garnered nearly 200,000 views on YouTube and continues to circulate on social media, where users debate the pricing of tourist transportation in Cancun.
The issue highlights the ongoing tension between taxi drivers and app-based mobility services, a topic that has frequently sparked controversy among tourists, service providers, and authorities.
