Progreso, Yucatán — Mexican Navy crews swept waters near Chicxulub and Progreso after a sailboat capsized Thursday, and officials said they found no evidence of fuel spills or damage to marine life.
The sailboat, which had an empty ballast tank, heeled sharply and overturned while crew members were raising the sails, according to the Navy’s Ninth Naval Zone.
Naval personnel from the Marine Environment Protection unit, known as PROMAM, patrolled the area in a vessel to check for hydrocarbon spills or other contaminants that could have leaked during the incident.
The Navy reported that inspections detected no spills or impacts on marine ecosystems.
Personnel from the Federal Maritime Guard (REMAFE), assigned to the Regional Harbor Master’s Office in Progreso, also carried out follow-up patrols aboard their vessel to handle administrative procedures and ensure the area posed no danger to navigation.
