Mérida, Yucatán — Mexican golfer Isabella Fierro is approaching the new LPGA Tour season with renewed confidence after regaining her tour card last year through strong performances on the EPSON Tour. One of her major challenges will be competing in the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba for the second consecutive year, scheduled from April 30 to May 3 at El Camaleón golf course.
“The world’s best players are coming, and I feel that will push me to give my absolute best,” Fierro said. “But ultimately, I’m treating it like any other tournament. The preparation is exactly the same—I’ll rest the same, eat the same—but we have the advantage of knowing the course already.”
Fierro, who currently resides in Mérida, emphasized the importance of staying relaxed this time around. “Being more relaxed will be important for me,” she noted, reflecting on her experience from last year when she failed to make the cut.
The tournament will feature top international competitors including world number two Nelly Korda and Olympic champion Lydia Ko. Fierro explained her approach to the challenging course: “You have to respect the golf course—that’s crucial. You need to know how to read the wind, be very patient if putts aren’t dropping. It’s a course that plays differently in the morning when there’s less wind compared to the afternoon when there’s a lot.”
This year, Fierro is placing greater emphasis on mental health. “I feel that’s most important, especially protecting my essence,” she said. “Once you reach the tour, it’s easy to compare yourself to others and to the world’s best players, and you start losing your essence. So who is Isabella? What makes her Isabella every day off the golf course? What Isabella do I want to reflect every day? That’s like my daily mantra—what person do I want to reflect, how do I feel, how am I? Because ultimately, how I feel is how I’m reflecting.”
Fierro maintains a disciplined training schedule when in Mérida, beginning workouts at 7 or 8 a.m., taking a 40-minute break around 5 p.m. to eat, then spending an hour and forty minutes in the gym before aiming to be asleep by 9 p.m. She takes one complete day off each week, typically Sunday or Monday, to disconnect completely from golf through activities like journaling, watching favorite series, or walking on the beach.
Her support team includes golf coach Horacio Morales, Australian physical trainer Janet Alexander based in San Diego, Chilean psychologist Eugenio Lizama in Miami, agent Gustavo Santoscoy García, and her sister Renata handling planning and finances. “It’s a team I trust completely because I know they’ll tell me when I’m doing things wrong, not just what I want to hear,” Fierro said.
While avoiding specific numerical goals, Fierro aims to stay healthy and injury-free, establish herself on the LPGA Tour, secure her tour card for next year, and move closer to qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
