Mexico — Sion Galaviz Medina, born on June 27, 2005, is a Mexican chess grand master, the eleventh to achieve this title in Mexico’s history, representing one of the highest achievements in this mental sport.
He began playing chess at a very young age, influenced by his family, who also practice the sport from childhood.
His Path to the GM Title
He obtained the International Master (IM) title after his performance in the Pan American Under-20 Championship where he also secured one of his Grand Master norms.
He represented Mexico at the 2024 World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where he achieved a GM norm playing on the main board.
In September 2025, he achieved his third norm and surpassed 2,500 Elo points, which allowed him to officially become a Grand Master (GM) — the highest title in chess recognized by FIDE.
He was a Mexican representative at the 2025 Chess World Cup and participated in other high-level international competitions.
Galaviz is known for an aggressive and tactical playing style, with an inclination toward dynamic openings that seek active control of the center and increase attack options. Additionally, he has spoken openly about the personal sacrifices and dedication involved in competing at a high level, even living away from his family to train more intensively.
