Cancún, Quintana Roo — Tourism operations in the Mexican Caribbean continue normally despite security alerts issued by multiple foreign governments following recent cartel violence in other parts of Mexico, according to industry officials.
The Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council reported that based on internal reports and official data, there have been no mass cancellations, establishment closures, or interruptions to tourist services despite disturbances occurring in various states across the country. The unrest followed a security operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, identified as a leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The business organization specified that hotels, airports, highways, ports, and complementary services are operating regularly, with both domestic and international visitors continuing their activities without restrictions.
The council also indicated there is ongoing communication with state and federal authorities to closely monitor any eventualities.
According to state government data, with 601,108 tourists accommodated at the end of the week and 602 scheduled flight operations in a single day, Quintana Roo maintains one of the highest levels of tourism activity in the country.
Consular Alerts and Travel Advisory Updates
In this context, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued an alert on Sunday directed at its personnel and citizens, citing security operations and reports of blockades in various regions of the country, including Quintana Roo.
The recommendations included:
- Minimizing unnecessary travel
- Avoiding areas near police activity
- Remaining aware of surroundings
- Consulting local media for updated information
- Contacting 911 in case of emergency
By Monday afternoon, Quintana Roo no longer appeared on the list of states mentioned in that alert; however, the general call for caution remains as part of standard consular protocols.
Simultaneously, governments including Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Turkey updated their travel advisories for Mexico, urging their citizens to exercise extreme caution and stay informed through official channels.
Institutional Coordination and Confidence Message
The Hotel Council emphasized that institutional coordination has been key to maintaining stability in the state and preserving the confidence of source markets, while also calling for avoiding the spread of rumors or unconfirmed information that could generate unjustified negative perceptions.
For her part, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa reported that the Security Committee remains in permanent session, with coordinated deployment of federal, state, and municipal forces to ensure the tranquility of residents and visitors to the state.
The hotel sector reiterated that stability, security, and timely communication are fundamental factors for maintaining the competitiveness of the Mexican Caribbean, one of the main economic engines of Quintana Roo and the country.
