Cancún, Quintana Roo — A family narrowly escaped injury Thursday afternoon when metal rods being transported on a truck flew forward and pierced their car during a traffic stop on José López Portillo Avenue.
The unusual accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection with Nichupte Avenue, a busy area leading to several residential complexes. A mother and her two young children were traveling in a white Kia sedan when the driver stopped for a red light in the left lane.
According to initial reports, the driver of a cargo truck behind the Kia braked abruptly. The metal structures on the truck’s roof, apparently not properly secured, shot forward. Several rods smashed through the car’s rear emblem and embedded themselves in the back of the rear seat where the two children were sitting.
The loud crash of breaking glass and the impact caused a major scare for the vehicle’s occupants. Witnesses said it was a miracle none of the rods struck the children or their mother. Private ambulance paramedics treated the family at the scene as a precaution, but they were not injured.
A municipal traffic department expert arrived to begin the process of determining liability and to issue a citation to the truck driver for failing to secure the cargo properly.
