Mérida, Mexico — Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada signed a collaboration agreement with Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, during the 2025 Tianguis Turístico in Baja California, solidifying a partnership aimed at enhancing tourism, cultural exchange, and economic development between the two cities.
Strengthening Tourism and Cultural Ties
The agreement establishes a framework for joint promotional activities, including the sharing of tourist attractions, culinary offerings, and cultural events. Both municipalities committed to organizing fairs, seminars, and congresses, as well as facilitating exchanges of artistic, traditional, and regional festivities.
“This agreement will allow us to exchange experiences in economic, tourism, cultural, and labor matters with Playa del Carmen,” said Mayor Patrón during the signing ceremony. She thanked Playa del Carmen Mayor Angy Estefanía Mercado Asencio for supporting the initiative, which seeks to generate equitable economic benefits for residents of both cities.
Additional commitments include:
- Sharing best practices in cultural heritage preservation and tourist protection.
- Enhancing digital promotion strategies.
- Strengthening ties with tourism industry chambers and associations.
Expanding Mérida’s Tourism Reach
In a separate agreement, Mérida’s City Council signed a letter of intent with Viva Aerobús to promote the Yucatán capital as a key travel destination. The airline’s Corporate Communications Director, Walfred Castro, emphasized the partnership’s role in connecting travelers to Mérida, bolstering both tourism and regional economic growth.
“Mérida continues to forge strategic alliances to showcase what makes us unique—our people, cultural richness, cuisine, and values,” Mayor Patrón stated. “This agreement reinforces our commitment to sharing the pride of being meridanos across Mexico and the world.”
The signing was attended by Mérida’s Síndico Municipal, María Cristina Castillo Espinosa; General Coordinator of Social Justice and Human Development, Flora Zapata Mendiolea; and Tourism Unit Head, Armando Casares Espinosa.
