Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayan gods, aluxes and the natural world come to life in Los niños de la lluvia (Children of the Rain), a play by dramatist Saúl Enríquez that will reach Cancún in a staged reading by the city’s Municipal Theater Company.
The story blends adventure, humor and poetry, and invites audiences to reflect on the need to protect the environment.
Free staged reading at the Teatro de la Ciudad
The reading is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Café de Cancún, inside the Teatro de la Ciudad. Admission is free.
The event is part of the run-up to the 16th National Colloquium of the Mexican Culture Seminar, giving the public a chance to encounter theater through a story inspired by Mayan culture.
A journey through the Mayan cosmos
The plot follows Muyal and Balam, two brothers who set out on a journey through the jungle to restore the balance of water and heal the heart of nature. Along the way they discover elements of Mayan cosmology, and the story weaves fantasy and tradition together with a message about safeguarding the natural world.
The adventure is also designed to bring young audiences closer to the cultural roots of the region.
Theater as an environmental lesson
Los niños de la lluvia is an ecological fable that stresses the importance of water and urges audiences to value nature and recognize the impact of everyday actions. Through its characters and their adventures, the play argues that each person can contribute to caring for the planet.
The reading offers a way into theater through imagination and Mayan culture, bringing the performing arts together with environmental education in a story aimed at fostering respect for nature.
