Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Secretariat of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur) is leveraging digital tools and strategic partnerships to promote authentic experiences in Maya communities as part of its efforts to integrate the Maya World into modern tourism promotion strategies.
Strengthening Digital Presence
Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Undersecretary of Promotion for Sedetur, stated that the agency is actively incorporating digital platforms and social media into its national promotion strategy for the Maya World. This initiative includes the development of websites, digital marketing campaigns, and curated experience catalogs tailored to contemporary travelers.
“We are working to integrate available digital tools into the Maya World’s national promotion efforts. Our goal is to enhance the website, improve social media outreach, and, most importantly, support the community-based businesses and experiences that will be part of this initiative,” Aguilar explained.
Empowering Community Tourism
One of the key projects is Maya Ka’an, a community tourism network that has participated in digital training workshops in collaboration with Google. These workshops have equipped local businesses with skills ranging from digital mapping to promotional strategy development.
Additionally, as part of a cooperative support program, 10 community enterprises have received resources to enhance their competitiveness. The Alianza Peninsular (Peninsular Alliance) has further strengthened community tourism networks, ensuring several communities now have operational websites.
Showcasing at Tianguis Turístico 2025
The promotion strategy will culminate with the presentation of the Maya World Mexico Experience Catalog at the upcoming Tianguis Turístico 2025, scheduled to take place in Baja California from April 28 to May 1. Developed in partnership with UNESCO, this catalog aims to highlight and preserve the cultural heritage of Maya communities.
Three-Pillar Strategy
Aguilar outlined the three foundational pillars of the initiative:
- Community Alliance – Represented by local tourism businesses.
- Institutional Alliance – Including collaborations with international organizations like UNESCO.
- Commercial Alliance – Such as partnerships with platforms like Airbnb to expand homestay opportunities.
“This model is designed to foster shared prosperity by creating direct connections between tourists and the community enterprises providing these services,” Aguilar emphasized.
The efforts underscore Sedetur’s commitment to blending cultural preservation with modern tourism demands, ensuring the Maya World remains a vibrant and accessible destination for global travelers.
