Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — She doesn’t wear a badge or carry a gun, but her presence commands respect—and brings smiles. Maura, a two-year-old Golden Retriever, is part of Playa del Carmen’s Secretariat of Citizen Security. Her specialty: detecting explosives. Her gift: being adorable while keeping thousands of people safe.
A Unique Guardian
Working alongside her human partner, Officer Hernández, Maura operates at crowded events and high-traffic locations. Though her role differs from drug or weapon detection, her training is just as rigorous. Despite the seriousness of her job, Maura retains her playful spirit. After sniffing suitcases and corners, she often seeks what she loves most: a pat, a smile, or a moment of human connection.
Officer Hernández explained that Maura follows a strict schedule, balancing work, rest in her specialized kennel, and proper nutrition. Yet, as a young and energetic dog, she turns every shift into an opportunity to learn about the world—and to show Playa del Carmen that safety can come on four paws with a sweet gaze.
