Cancún — A macabre discovery mobilized Municipal Police officers on Saturday afternoon after an anonymous report alerted authorities about a “suspicious bundle” abandoned on the side of the Bonampak-Punta Sam highway, approximately one kilometer from the University of the Caribbean.
The alert came in around 1:30 p.m. to the 911 emergency number, which immediately activated the response protocols of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security. Upon arriving at the site, officers found the body of a man wrapped in sheets and black plastic bags in an advanced state of decomposition.
Following the discovery, authorities notified the State Attorney General’s Office so that personnel from the Ministerial Investigation Police and Forensic Services could assume the initial procedures. The area was cordoned off, causing traffic congestion, so Traffic agents redirected circulation to the opposite lane to prevent further traffic chaos toward Costa Mujeres.
According to forensic experts, the corpse was found in a curve located approximately one kilometer from the University of the Caribbean. Based on the body’s condition, it was presumed to have been at the site for about a week. Specialists confirmed that it showed signs of violence such as restraint marks on the limbs and possible indications of strangulation.
Due to the advanced state of putrefaction, it was not possible to determine physical characteristics or clothing of the victim. Additionally, no surveillance cameras were found in the area, which could complicate tracking of possible suspects or vehicles involved.
The body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service for the corresponding autopsy and awaits identification by family members in the coming hours.
