Lucero and Mijares to Headline Cancun Independence Day Concert

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Singers Lucero and Mijares will headline the Sept. 15 Independence Day concert in Cancún, closing the evening’s program on the esplanade of the Benito Juárez Municipal Palace.

City General Secretary Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández announced the lineup and said Landy Canché Pantoja, who is in charge of the municipal president’s office, will lead the traditional Grito de Dolores ceremony.

“The person leading that event will be, without a doubt, the official in charge of the municipal presidency, Councilor Landy Canché Pantoja,” he said.

Gutiérrez said the city government is preparing a security operation for the celebration. About 600 officers from the municipal police, the National Guard, the Mexican Navy and the Secretariat of Citizen Security will be deployed around the municipal palace. Officials expect around 24,000 people to attend, a figure consistent with previous Independence Day ceremonies in Cancún.

Alcohol will not be allowed at the event, a restriction in place for several years. Gutiérrez said the measure has worked, noting that recent celebrations ended without major incidents.

Gutiérrez also addressed questions about Mayor Ana Paty Peralta’s second government report. Peralta is currently participating in Morena’s internal selection process for the party’s state coordinator of the Fourth Transformation.

He said that if the process does not conclude by the end of the month, Canché Pantoja could present the report in Peralta’s place. City staff are working intensively on the document, which is expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.

“All of our colleagues are working on this document, which is very important to present in this final year of the administration,” Gutiérrez said. “If the internal process has not concluded by the date of the report, the official in charge of the municipal presidency, First Councilor Landy Canché Pantoja, will have to present it.”
