José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — In an effort to reconnect with the town’s chiclero heritage and strengthen its cultural identity through art, the first edition of the "Kilómetro 50" Cultural Camp will take place on Wednesday, June 25. The event, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo, aims to highlight the history and artistic diversity of the municipality and the broader state.

A Celebration of Heritage and Art

The initiative was announced by visual artist and cultural promoter Gaspar Suárez Caamal, who emphasized the camp’s goal of fostering integration among diverse artistic disciplines while engaging with the region’s history.

“This camp seeks to promote the origins of our town, which began as a chiclero camp and evolved into the municipality we know today. That’s why we’ve named it ‘Kilómetro 50’—as a symbolic journey through our collective memory,” Suárez Caamal explained.

The program will feature lectures, music, poetry, dance, and a prominent visual arts exhibition. Among the participants is historian Levy Santos Medina, who will deliver a talk on the historical origins and transformation of José María Morelos.

Poet Wildernaim Villegas will present a poetry reading, while the traditional dance group Nuestras Raíces, directed by Santiago Sandoval, will perform. Local musicians will also showcase their work.

Bridging Generations Through Art

The visual arts exhibition will display works by established artists from Chetumal, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and José María Morelos, alongside pieces by emerging young artists from the municipality. This curated selection aims to create a dialogue between generations and diverse artistic styles.

The event is free and open to the public. Suárez Caamal extended a special invitation to citizens, business owners, educators, and students to participate.

“We need to amplify initiatives like this. Art is essential for the development of our community, and this is a great opportunity to discover the talent emerging from our state,” he concluded.

The "Kilómetro 50" Cultural Camp is poised to become a landmark in the local cultural calendar, reinforcing regional identity and showcasing the artistic talent rooted in Quintana Roo.
