Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres has announced the official program for the 2025 Foundation Festival, commemorating the 175th anniversary of the island’s founding. The festivities, packed with cultural, artistic, religious, sporting, and gastronomic events, will run from August 1 to August 17.

A Celebration of Heritage and Community

Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde led the press conference presenting the festival’s lineup, emphasizing its goal to strengthen local identity, honor the community’s roots, promote family-friendly activities, and boost the local economy. She was joined by key officials, including Maricarmen Martínez Vera, Director of Culture; Fernando Bacelis Godoy, Director of Sports; Hernán Magaña Vargas, Director of Economic and Tourism Development; and Hugo Iván Sánchez Montalvo, Secretary General of the City Council.

Gómez Ricalde highlighted that this special anniversary edition was meticulously planned to respect traditions while prioritizing the well-being of island families, particularly children and seniors. “These celebrations are for and by the people, ensuring everyone can enjoy them without distinction. We want our roots to resonate with joy and dignity,” she stated.

Highlights of the Festival

Opening Events

  • August 1: The festivities kick off at 7:00 PM with the inauguration of the Feria de Ticul con Encanto at Paseo de la Trigueña.
  • August 2: The Noche de las Embajadoras (Night of the Ambassadors) and the coronation of the 2025 Festival Ambassador will take place at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Plaza.

Cultural and Historical Showcases

  • August 3: The photographic exhibition “Isla Mujeres, Ayer, Hoy y Siempre” (Isla Mujeres, Yesterday, Today, and Forever) opens at 7:00 PM in the Municipal Plaza, offering a visual journey through the municipality’s evolution.

Religious Observances

  • August 5: A mass at 7:00 PM at the Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción will precede the procession of the Virgen de la Asunción at 8:00 PM.
  • August 15: The return of the Virgen de la Asunción will be marked by a traditional vaquería (folk dance) with live jarana music in the Municipal Plaza.

Entertainment and Sports

  • August 9: The Domo Bicentenario will host “Furia en el Caribe”, a wrestling event starting at 5:30 PM.
  • August 10: A literary discussion titled “Letras de Amor a Isla Mujeres” (Love Letters to Isla Mujeres) will be held at 5:30 PM in the Sala de Cabildo, followed by a ceviche competition and “Nochecitas Isleñas” (Island Nights) featuring local troubadours at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Plaza.

Grand Finale

  • August 16: A floral tribute at 7:30 AM at the Cruz de la Bahía will honor the island’s founders. The evening will feature the Concurso de la Bebida Isleña (Island Drink Contest) at 7:00 PM and a free concert by Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa de Monterrey at 10:00 PM in the Municipal Plaza.
  • August 17: The festival concludes with a public session celebrating the 175th anniversary and a performance by Las Trovadoras del Mayab at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Plaza.
