Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — As part of the celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, the municipal government, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, hosted a traditional breakfast this morning with descendants of the island’s founding families. The event paid tribute to the men and women who laid the groundwork for what is now a globally recognized tourist destination.
Held at the Naval Casino, the gathering brought together descendants of the founders of the former Pueblo de Dolores, now Isla Mujeres, in an atmosphere of joy, shared memories, and storytelling.
A Legacy of Resilience and Unity
In her address, Mayor Gómez Ricalde emphasized the strength and determination of those who shaped the island’s history, noting that their legacy of unity and hard work continues to inspire future generations.
“I am proud to be an islander and of my roots because Isla Mujeres is a Pueblo Mágico that beats to the rhythm of its people: hardworking, committed, and with an unbreakable spirit that has propelled our island forward,” she said.
She also invited attendees to participate enthusiastically in the ongoing Founding Festivities, which include a traditional Vaquería (folk dance event) at the Municipal Plaza later in the evening. Additional events scheduled for the weekend include the Isleña Beverage Contest and a concert by Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa de Monterrey on Saturday, followed by a Solemn Session and a performance by Las Trovadoras del Mayab on Sunday.
Distinguished Attendees
The event was attended by key figures, including Omar Zavala Rodríguez, representative of the Fifth Naval Region; María Dolores Cobela Vargas, Port Captain; Fidel Villanueva Madrid, lifelong chronicler of Isla Mujeres; and the 2025 Founding Monarchs, Lucía Magaña Alcocer and Ángel Feliciano Ávila Sánchez.
The gathering underscored the enduring cultural and historical significance of Isla Mujeres, reaffirming the community’s pride in its heritage.
