Iran Proposes Moving 2026 World Cup Matches from US to Mexico Amid Tensions

Iranian Ambassador Abolfazl Pasandideh speaking at a press conference in Mexico

Mexico City — Iran’s ambassador to Mexico has proposed moving his country’s 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexican territory amid ongoing international tensions.

Ambassador Abolfazl Pasandideh told reporters at a press conference that Iran would support relocating its scheduled matches from U.S. venues to Mexico if such changes were possible. The diplomat explained that the Iranian delegation maintains a positive perception of Mexico and had initially hoped their matches would be scheduled there.

Pasandideh’s comments come amid ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. He acknowledged Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s stance on the international situation facing his nation and thanked Mexican legislators for gestures of solidarity, including moments of silence in Congress following an attack on Iranian territory.

The ambassador called on both the Mexican government and society to stand on the side of what they consider just in the international conflict. He also noted that support has been provided to facilitate the departure of Mexican citizens who were in Iran.

Regarding Iran’s internal affairs, Pasandideh highlighted that the country’s new religious leader, Mojtaba Jamenei, possesses the capability to govern. He concluded by asserting that despite current attacks and tensions, the Iranian people will continue to resist the situation.
