Shootout in Bacalar as Cartel Gunmen Confront Security Forces

Security forces and cartel gunmen clash in Limones, Bacalar

Chetumal — An intense shootout was reported in the community of Limones, Municipality of Bacalar, between gunmen from the Caborca Cartel and police forces from the three levels of government.

According to initial unofficial reports, officers from the three levels of government who intended to execute search warrants in the community of Limones, in the municipality of Bacalar, were met by at least 40 armed men identified as gunmen from the Caborca Cartel.

The operation involves personnel from the Mexican Army, the Navy, the State Investigation Police, and state preventive corporations. The information is preliminary and still developing.

According to initial reports, the search warrants were directed at homes of families allegedly linked to the Rodríguez Interián group, a criminal cell with a presence in the southern zone of the state and that forms part of the organization led by the Caro Quintero family.

The armed reaction reportedly led to an exchange of gunfire against security forces, raising the risk level for the local population and forcing an increase in institutional presence in the area.

These events occur after the road blockades registered in the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos, attributed to the Caborca Cartel as a response to the detention of the wife of Irán Interián, alias “El Gemelo,” identified as one of the main generators of violence in the region. The road obstructions were reportedly used as a pressure and distraction mechanism against authorities’ actions.

In this context, it is reported that shootouts against police from the three levels of government continue in different points of Quintana Roo, which evidences an escalation in the confrontation between criminal groups and state forces. Authorities maintain an ongoing operation and do not rule out new actions, while awaiting official information that confirms outcomes, detentions, or seizures. The situation remains under monitoring.
