Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Quintana Roo has started 2026 with two successful organ and tissue procurements, offering new hope for patients on transplant waiting lists.
Both cases involved men whose families, after receiving medical guidance, authorized cornea donations. The tissues went to La Raza Hospital in Mexico City, where they will help restore vision for people with severe eye conditions.
Dr. Moisés Campos Navarro, the hospital donation coordinator at General Regional Hospital No. 17, stressed that discussing donation within families is crucial. He noted that myths and silence often prevent honoring the wishes of potential donors.
“Even though there are possible donation candidates in the state, families frequently don’t know their relative’s stance because they never talked about it while they were alive,” Campos Navarro explained. He urged people to clearly express their decision and share it with loved ones.
In these recent donations, siblings made the choice through dialogue, agreeing that this act of solidarity would allow their family member’s life to help others.
In 2025, IMSS Quintana Roo recorded 23 donations, including three multi-organ cases, setting a historic precedent for the state. However, Campos Navarro reminded that not everyone can become a donor, as they must meet specific medical criteria, have formal authorization from a direct relative, and have a complete clinical record.
The IMSS state office reiterated its commitment to promoting donation culture and strengthening actions to help more patients access transplants.
