Ex-Leader “Mafer” Wins Medical Care Order in Prison

Cancún, Mexico — From prison, Salomón Alfonso Muñoz, alias "Mafer," the former leader of the Andrés Quintana Roo taxi union in Cancún, has complained of a lack of medication. Muñoz is currently imprisoned and charged with the homicide of a former aide to deputy Rubén Carrillo.

The Fifth District Court granted an immediate suspension order in favor of Mafer, compelling the prison to administer medication and provide medical attention. It is alleged that he is also seeking to justify a deterioration in his health in order to eventually request a transfer to his home for probable house arrest.

This Wednesday, following a four-day break for federal courts and tribunals, the precautionary measure benefiting Salomón Alfonso Muñoz was announced. Muñoz has been detained since last November, facing a criminal process for the probable homicide of José Luis Corral Morales, who was the image advisor for Rubén Carrillo.

Mafer is under a formal indictment and justified preventive prison for the deprivation of the life of the former advisor, which occurred in October 2024. Since then, he has sought to leave the Cancún prison through various legal appeals, such as the amparo trial.

“The immediate suspension is granted,” reads the file for indirect amparo trial 890/2025 decisively. With this, Mafer sued the director of the Cancún Prison, whom he accused of not supplying him with medication and medical attention.

Salomón Alfonso Muñoz held the leadership of the Andrés Quintana Roo taxi union for a period of almost three months. During the brief time he was at the helm, homicides were carried out against the taxi drivers themselves.

In a raid carried out at the end of October 2024, it was discovered that the office of the now accused was used to carry out acts of torture, where José Luis Corral Morales was also allegedly assaulted. His lifeless body was found on the exit from Cancún towards Mérida, marking the beginning of investigations against the leadership of the Andrés Quintana Roo taxi union.
