Cancun, Quintana Roo — Human skeletal remains were discovered Tuesday afternoon in vegetation behind a market workers’ union along Gas Auto Highway. A worker clearing nearby land spotted the bones among the brush and immediately reported the finding to emergency services.
State and municipal police officers arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area to preserve evidence. The State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) and criminal investigators collected evidence and conducted preliminary examinations at the location.
Forensic Medical Service personnel removed the remains and transported them to their facilities for osteological studies and DNA testing. These examinations will attempt to establish the person’s identity and possible cause of death.
Authorities have opened an investigation file to determine whether the case relates to criminal activity or previous missing person reports. Investigators thoroughly searched the surrounding area but found no additional remains or personal items.
No preliminary information about the circumstances of death or how long the remains had been at the site has been released.
