Uninsured Motorcycle Crisis in Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The population of motorcycles in Quintana Roo has seen notable growth in recent years, driven by traffic congestion and high transportation costs, especially in tourist destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. However, the vast majority of these riders do not have insurance to protect them in the event of an accident, which could lead to significant financial losses and risks to their safety.

Only Five Percent of Riders Have Insurance Policies

Official data estimates that over one million motorcycles circulate on the state's streets, an indicator that underscores the urgency for public policies that reinforce the protection and safety of this growing number of riders. Yet, only five percent of these drivers have contracted insurance policies, putting their personal assets and road safety at risk throughout the state.

At a national level, the increased use of motorcycles has not been accompanied by a strong culture of purchasing insurance, leaving many riders vulnerable. The lack of a formal mandate in municipal regulations—which only suggest, but do not require, having civil liability insurance—contributes to this situation.

Experts Call for Mandatory Insurance Policies

Insurance experts consider it urgent for authorities to impose the obligation to have basic policies, similar to practices in other countries, to reduce the economic and social consequences of vehicular accidents.

Additionally, the cost of basic coverage, which can start from 3,500 pesos, should not be considered an impediment, as protection against potential damages or injuries can prevent severe patrimonial losses. The erroneous perception that insuring a motorcycle is excessively costly and the lack of a culture of consulting with professionals in the field are obstacles that must be overcome.

The current trend highlights the need for a reform that makes this legal protection mandatory, for the safety and protection of all actors on the road.
