Cancún, Quintana Roo — Intense rainfall over the past several hours in Cancún forced two flights to divert to Mérida International Airport in Yucatán as a precaution against poor weather at the terminal serving the Mexican Caribbean, according to an official report on the disruptions.
The diverted aircraft were Viva Aerobus flight 2103 and Volaris flight 5103, both of which were redirected to land in Mérida, roughly 300 kilometers (185 miles) west of Cancún.
Cancún airport keeps 381 operations on schedule
Despite the weather, Cancún International Airport had 381 arrivals and departures scheduled for Friday, comprising 190 landings and 191 takeoffs.
The figure reflects the expected traffic at one of Mexico’s busiest tourist hubs, though officials cautioned that conditions could force schedule changes depending on rainfall intensity, visibility and operational safety criteria.
Forecast warns of very heavy rain across Quintana Roo
The weather forecast for Friday called for locally very heavy rain across Quintana Roo, accompanied by lightning, driven by moisture flowing in from the Caribbean Sea and other atmospheric instability, according to information based on the National Meteorological Service.
Such conditions can cut visibility and temporarily complicate approach and landing maneuvers, meaning flights may be placed on hold or sent to alternate airports when safety requires.
Authorities advised passengers to check with their airlines about the status of their flights and to confirm any itinerary changes before traveling to the terminal.
So far, the disruption has been limited to the two flights sent to Mérida, while meteorologists continue to monitor the weather.
